Had this in a chat about AI with colleagues yesterday.

They were talking about using ChatGPT to plan holidays: a few seconds! Your whole itinerary!

But the joy of it is in sorting it yourself: researching, finding a hidden gem, getting excited and comparing ideas.

It's such a soulless approach

AI-generated reversion to the mean may make us all sheep, yes, but there is also scope for evolution via speciation into beach holidays, activity holidays, wilderness holidays, Game of Thrones location holidays, and so on. I dread the day that the “wild camping in Wales” holiday takes off.

On holiday last year in Bologna, we heard folk using ChatGPT to find restaurants... while we were in a long queue with them for an ok restaurant. So yes, I think you're right!

I've spent several months already researching and planning my August holiday, it's been enormous fun, and I'm not done yet. Also, a starting point of "Interrailing the Rhine" is an entire education in itself and why wouldn't anyone want to learn?

That's also true. I can understand why ChatGPT might *feel* like it's giving better information than today's Google.
