As a follow-up, I can highly recommend "Say Why to Drugs" by Dr Suzi Gage which also goes into detail on a large number of drugs in a non-judgmental manner, explaining their history, usages, myths, positive/negative effects and what we don't know about the drugs.

While in college, I worked as a vet technician and used ketamine routinely with animal patients. It wasn't until years later that I found out it is used in humans as well.

As a med/surg nurse I have given ketamine drips to patients with poorly controlled postoperative pain - it's not super common but it is still definitely used in hospitals

Ketamine 💉🚬💊 was introduced in 1964 for use in the Viet Nam war, given before, during and after surgery. It produced both analgesia (profound pain relief) and amnesia (softening of memory) while not slowing heart rate or breathing, thus reducing trauma after severe injury.

In recent years, ketamine 💉🚬💊 was withdrawn from (human) anesthetic use after doctors recognized troubling symptoms while coming out from under ketamine: delusions, hallucinations, delirium, confusion ⁉️. Low doses (~0.1 mg/kg/hr) are still used as local anesthetic for simple procedures.

My mom attacked three med staff and tried to jump out the window when given ketamine prior to surgery in 1997. Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland OR was still using it for adults then.

The dopamine 😁 response is at the root of why it is sometimes used for treatment-resistant depression. My understanding is that a certain excessively rich man 💵💵💵💵💵 ostensibly takes it in this capacity.
