I understand why Nintendo put the firmware for the WiFi chip into each individual WiFi enabled game as opposed to putting it into the console's OS (since the OS completely shuts down when a game boots and the game can't access it anymore)

but I still don't think it was a good idea

Since the OG DS has no operating system, the game interfaces directly with the hardware, and the developer must write all their own drivers. The one exception to this is WiFi, for which drivers were provided by Nintendo and simply Ctrl+C Ctrl+V'd into any game that needed them (1/?)

The OG DS's WiFi chip only supported WEP, so it's the only kind of security those ancient drivers understand. When the DSi and 3DS came out, they had newer WiFi chips that supported WPA2, and shiny new OSes that allowed games to talk to the Internet without bundling their own WiFi drivers. (2/?)

Apps that used the OS routines to access the internet, like those systems' built-in browsers, work just fine on WPA networks, but as soon as those systems boot into a DS game, the operating system shuts down to let the game take over and you're stuck with the ancient WEP-only driver (3/?)

It is thus *theoretically* possible for a DS game to access WPA networks if a newer driver was somehow IPS patched into it, although I don't know if anyone's making one.

All info in this thread is nothing more than a best guess based on what I've seen DS games do, so take with grain of salt. (4/4)
