I was an undergrad at Eastern when the first David Johansen record came out. I remember how excited I was, after reading Paul Nelson’s rave review in Rolling Stone, to pick it up at the record store in the Eastbrook Mall.

It did not disappoint. Recorded by Richard Robinson (who also recorded Lou Reed’s Street Hassle the same year), the guitars four deep on some songs, it was one of the best *sounding* records I had ever heard.
The band was just as good live. Chris and I went to see them more times than I can remember. David was even the first person I had ever heard refer to it as “Romantic Willimantic”.
