In 7th grade I read GO ASK ALICE. It was a diary of a woman's struggle with drug addiction. It had explicit sexual entries. I did my book report on it, which I read to the class. My teacher informed the librarian & the book was removed. That book kept me from making very bad choices later in life.

The Dean Koontz books I read when I was 10 were crucial. And Stephen King's IT being forbidden only made me *need* to read it.
Saying "no, kids shouldn't read this, it's inappropriate" while also leaving those books out where I could easily get at them did wonders for making a kid excited to read.
