I have literally never heard of either of these options
Only discord alternative I was aware of before was matrix, which was something of a fediverse equivilant for discord (which is to say it's overly complex and only used by massive nerds

Element is a Matrix client! And yeah, it's... good. But really confusing most of the time.

Revolt is less nerdy, but lacking in terms of features. Still has some basic stuff missing. But tbh, it's pretty promising. We'll see where it goes.

I myself will probably stick to discord until a significant amount of people move elsewhere (I was never that big on giant public group chats to begin with so I'm not in a rush to move to another platform for them). It would be nice if communities moved back to self-hosting content though

I might play with Revolt. I ran a Matrix/Synapse server for a year or so but the utter lack of user admin capability (other than "go to the command line and construct an API call... with a HERRING!") finally made me give up. Maybe, someday.

It is only on desktop, as far as we can tell. Not sure when exactly it was introduced, my client is on stable 371939 (cc9439f) and I have it.
