Spring '24 I had a student from Afghanistan in a 100-level class. He was much older, late 20s, than the other students. He wanted to make sure he did well, so he came to my office hours regularly and we talked about his life. He would get so excited when we talked about his home, food, family.

At one point he said, "you must come visit us in Kabul some..." and then he remembered and said, "oh, the Taliban put me in prison for four months before I got out." Leaving unsaid that he can't go back now. Puts in relief the dangers faced by those we've abandoned.
