Plastic Fantastic is excellent, although saddening, as it showed failure of once-rigorous Bell Labs internal review system for proposed publications, when I was there, 1973-83. Papers went up to Executive Directors, across to other E.D.s, who sent down for reviews, tougher than external peer review.

So many great parts to the book that we didn't even get around to discussing this important aspect (or the ways that peer review failed in journals like Nature). Great to hear from someone with direct experience of the way Bell Labs used to work!

We planned on also discussing @eugenie-reich.bsky.social's current work as a lawyer defending scientific whistleblowers, but ran out of time.

Eugenie kindly agreed to do a 2nd interview, in which we discuss all legal aspects of scientific fraud.
