The militarization of police is one aspect of suppressing dissent, but it’s also tied to violence from paramilitary mobs who work in lockstep. We saw this with BLM and then again with the Gaza protests.

This has been a feature for as long as there’s been law enforcement.

What’s communicated with authoritarianism is a simple deal: stay out of our way and keep what you can, join and engage in violence and possibly share the spoils, or oppose us and risk being crushed.

Sounds familiar. Phoenix PD did something similar to police protesters a few years ago. I'd say it didn't work out well for the police, but tbh, they got away with a lot of it.
