Merkel actually publicly blasted Merz for his right-wing policies and politicking, while he was her own party's lead candidate, in the middle of campaign season. Merkel was known in Germany for her adaptive political maneuvering, and at times criticized and mocked for lacking principles.

This doesn't get enough attention in international coverage: For left-leaning and centrist Germans, the shift to Merz both in the CDU and in Germany as a whole is pretty damn terrifying. It can not be overstressed how much further to the right this man is than Angela Merkel.
