Exactly! Women can have more than one interest. I hate how society tries to manufacture a rivalry between “book women” and “makeup women” when actually many women are interested in both!

I think of makeup and clothing as a creative performance through which people communicate affiliation and awareness of social information, and engage in skill development and display. There is an important element of choice that people may or may not have access to. If it’s not play, it’s not fun.

That is a very good definition! It takes more skill than many realise to do makeup. I can’t stand people (mostly men, but also some women, sadly) who think people who enjoy makeup are silly or unthinking.

I think those people need to pay more attention. There’s a lot going on with makeup. And the kids know it, even if pre-MUA influencer-era people unfortunately don’t.

I love books, but this mindset is far too common in “bookish spaces”, and it makes me want to avoid them. It’s fine if you don’t want to wear makeup, but it does not make you smarter or more intellectual. And it’s okay to be a woman with more than one interest.

It’s perfectly acceptable for a man to read and write books, but also play and talk about video games (just to make a random example). Society seems to have a harder time understanding that women can love books, but also makeup and many other things.
