I always thought Castlevania’s design was from a bygone era of game design where devs thought they could throw whatever they wanted at the player with no consequence because gamers were built different and used to punishing difficulty, sometimes unfairly so.
I agree! I keep getting stuck at Dracula, but it's a game I love to play to unwind. Learning when and where to use the sub weapons is one of the best parts of learning that game.
Until the end. Im so annoyed because its so close to being an actual well designed NES game thats hard but not infuriating, which is at least semi rare, but the section with Death kills it for me x-x
There’s a reason I’ve been calling it the first great 3rd party game on the NES for years now. It has very little jank, and outperforms every other 3rd party game at the time in terms of graphics and sound. It’s only real flaw is the stiff controls, but that doesn’t derail the experience

It paved the way for the future generations of video games and game devs.
Such a shame that Castlevania is not as popular as other franchise like street fighters or Mario.
having holy water as a definitive solution to every boss fight isn't particularly a good game design
same with how in Contra/Super C you either have Spread Gun or the game stops being enjoyable
