I lived in Germany in the 70s, just 30 yrs after the war. They all knew. A few of them were survivors of parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who tried to resist (my dad was a colleague of von Stauffenberg’s son, Berthold). But most went along, fine w the Nazis until they started losing the war.

Of course. RAF and Baader-Meinhoff group were things that were in the back of one’s mind, esp so as an American. But it’s funny that back then neither the Germans nor the American military went into the absurd level of security panic that they did after 2001. Even after actual bombings of US bases.

Fine with it as long as they were winning and the hatred was directed towards other groups. My father left Austria as a Jewish child in 1938. He never got over the trauma they endured and his family was one of the lucky ones to survive.

Very glad your father was able to get out. I imagine the Anschluss closed that window for many. Growing up several of my friends were the kids of Jewish refugees from Germany, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Poland, etc whose families were able to get out & not get caught later in the German occupation.

My grandfather was arrested the day of the Anschluss but my grandmother was able to get him released and exiled from the country. The rest of the family took several months to get exit visas and traveled around Europe for months waiting for US visas. Some of my Hungarian relatives weren’t as lucky.

Exactly right. Even von Stauffenberg and his collaborators were, shall we say, a little late to the party. It wasn’t until it was clear that Hitler was taking them down a path to utter defeat that they took action. And the action was intended to save Germany. Saving Germany’s victims was incidental.
