Generally through smell (pheromones), but sound, color, glow (bioluminescence), electric impulses, and motion are all factors. they can recognize siblings and fish of the same species, but cannot recognize themselves. that’s how they join shoals of fish of the same species as them. 🫧

If you looked at those same fish every single day, eventually you would be able to tell them apart. It's the same with all animals that you think look the same. Once you get to know them, you notice the slight difference that help you tell them apart. 😊
