And every single named iris is an identical daughter clone, or clone of a daughter clone, of a single iris seedling. Once a var is slated for introduction, it takes several MORE years to grow and divide enough daughters to offer for sale.

When the seeds don't grow, or do, but bloom incorrectly 2 years later, the seller is long gone.
Same for the rhizome, which also takes 2 years from creation off a mother rhizome to bloom.
Basically, the iris world would have known about this as a new release well in advance of the public.

Scammers thus have an ideal situation. Advertise an amazing looking flower. Sell seeds, or even a small rhizome from some unknown iris for a premium price.
Deliver (or just take the $), and then disappear.

Hybridizers plant hundreds of seedlings every year and then may only grow on 2 plants, culling all the rest (2 years later).
It is quite literally impossible that the faked iris in question wasn't named and registered, shown in medal shows, and then introduced publicly by a reputable source.

To grow an iris from seed is a long and difficult process involving refrigeration for months to cold stratify to even get them to germinate. Then a minimum of 2 years growing before it blooms, often lacking any interesting or unique features worthy of cultivating.

Unfortunately, iris have been a hot scam item for years. As I said, they NEVER breed true from seed, and in fact, every viable seed from a single pod will grow a completely different looking flower than all it's siblings AND its parents.

If it looks too good to be true, it has a 99.9% chance it's fake.
The AIS is an international Iris registry and amazing resource.

Thank you. I wouldn't buy iris seed at all, I'm more likely to swap for roots/starts, but these pictures are driving me a bit nuts. The galaxy petunias truly do have those star patterns, so ok, maybe iris does now...but zebra stripes stopped me cold.

Try looking for "broken" iris vars. They have some very cool patterns.
