Iron Maiden ‘Killers’. I love how *intensely* English Derek Riggs artwork is. Note the Victorian terrace houses; the sixties maisonette flats; the sickly yellow street lights.

This! @harrysword.bsky.social, THIS! Eddie was a distinctly ’(sub)urban’ phenomenon from 1980-81. I love Riggs’s work so much from this era. Political (un)realism even? (Thatcher stabbed on ‘Sanctuary’, resurrected as revenge-seeking [and Falklands-anticipating] soldier on ‘Women in Uniform’).
Those early Maiden sleeves really reflected the council estate streets of my youth in Wakefield. For years my bestie and I referred to the street lights on our roads as “ #IronMaiden lights”.
Someone should write about this? (I’ll gladly do it if anyone interested has a suitable outlet.)
Fun Derek Riggs fact - this cover for Budgie's Nightflight - which I think predates Killers - was originally done for Hawkwind, but Riggs got worried they weren't going to pay, so sold it to Wales' finest instead...
