Tanking and executing a turnaround is tougher than people think in any sport, but having, say, a bad O-line is going to ruin a young QB in a way a bad supporting cast won't ruin a lottery pick in the NBA.

Smart teams will stop putting so many resources (high draft, top of market cap $$$) into the QB position. They will make more efficient investments in the rest of the team so get sustainable results.

Not the NBA, tanking doesn’t work. A bad year to a decent roster that gifts an unforeseen top 5 pick is huge but rare (see SF Bosa, IND Luck). player windows are too short, you can’t waste a year of top talent or cap value in hopes of drafting a guy that might not declare and is a 50/50 proposition

Not just that, you have to get that hypothetical just right pick in the just right draft. Like, what if Seahawks had top 5 pick this year? There is no guarantee that either of the top QB's in the draft are the guy. Build a good team with talent, and you'll give your QB a chance to be good.

Pat Mahomes was a top ten pick that the Chiefs traded up into. I would say that's a pretty big draft swing. I think the issue is that most of the teams that are bad enough to draft that high do not have the capability of building a roster around that top pick (Panthers, Jets, Jaguars, Browns, etc.)

How much of The Right QB ends up being more about simplistic soft factors? High profile, face of the franchise, always gives you a chance, field general... You obviously don’t want a bad or mediocre one, and having a great one is fun (in theory as I’m a Bears fan). There’s a lot more to success tho

I don’t totally agree with the Geno decision, but I suspect Schneider actually agrees with this sentiment from the standpoint of not over-allocating resources to the QB position. Hopefully they spend those resources well.
