Social security is a claim on future wealth, and stocks are an estimate - net present value - of future wealth. The two are inherently related. If stocks tell us we'll make less value in the future, there will be less value to be consumed by social security recipients.
Not that I can afford 401k, but I also think it contributes both to increasing the wealth of the rich (who don't need 401k) as well as exploiting the workers. While corporate retirement plans had their problems, I don't think 401k was the right fix.

Investing should be a way to get ahead, not survive.
Why not socialize the profits and privatize the losses?
Unlike a private 401(k), which can be invested in international markets, federal social security cannot.
If that's not 25th amendment material I don't know what is.
