i've been thinking about how much I enjoy games that are frustrating, convoluted, and really hard to get into and harder to get through. maybe even quite stressful. would anybody have any suggestions in this category

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, a crpg of the pathfinder 1st edition system. it's near and dear to my heart but as both a crpg in general and a crpg of pathfinder specifically it is Quite Dense. but i have like. super advanced autism for pathfinder so i love it
also since it takes place in the country that's got an endless supply of demons storming in and turning the place insane it's got lots of weird fucked up stuff happening
Oh, that's like my specialty, haha!
I've been playing Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop lately and that sounds like it'd fit the bill on the surface of it, haha! I highly recommend it; stressful in all the good ways, with an option to turn the time pressure off if you want a little frenetic experience.
Also, the Illwinter Games are always good for games that are just *a lot* - Dominions (6 is the newest) is more of a massive Grand Strategy sort of game; Conquest of Elysium (5 is the newest) is a a little more fast and loose and small scale - kind of in the zip code of Heroes of Might and Magic.
It's really charming and weird and fun and frustrating - I've been having a really good time with it and every time someone watches me play, they buy it within 1 day, lmao!
But yeah, it's been a super good time and the story goes some weird, fun places. I highly recommend it!
Yeyeye!~ It's a little bit like roguelite Keep Talking mixed with Cook Serve Delicious! - learn a bunch of processes; do 'em faster & better, solve a bunch of super-obtuse puzzles on the side. It sounds like you'd have a great time with it!
I GOTTA GET DARKEST DUNGEONNNN that's like THE hard rpg I keep hearing my friends talk about, but I've never tried it myself! i don't know anything about it but it seems like such a tough romp, I think I'd love it
It is pretty fun! though word to the wise, do not use the dlc, at least not until you are a little way into the game. you can wind up bricking your progress
seconding this, having the *classes* available is fine but do NOT fucking put the Crimson Court on your first run, game got too hard too fast and there was way too much stuff to manage for a first-time player and I had to restart
fear and hunger is one of the few I'm already on top of, i've barely scratched the surface of both games but they're some of my favorite rpg maker games out there
Uhh elaborate more, is thiz like high learning curve and satisfying reward like dark souls ive heard or rhythm games? Or is it like "designed to not be enjoyable" like getting over it, or is it stuff thats intended to be hard like the N series?
i like all of the above. most of all i kind of like when it's not only a high learning curve but also everything is actively fighting against your success
;; don't mind me i'm going through the rain world recent posts and saw the reply to this recommending it; i second (third, more like) highly recommending rw but also! monster hunter, the combat is awful and it sucks until it Clicks and then suddenly it's like The most satisfying in any game ever
ever played La-Mulana? I've not gotten through the whole game myself, but if you enjoy the idea of a particularly puzzling metroidvania, you may like it
I LOVE LA-MULANA but have never actually played the dang thing. i've heard good things about its insane difficulty & puzzle obfuscation and i've seen (some!) of a let's play that really sold me on it but I've just never picked it up haha
People will always bring up true roguelikes a la Caves of Qud and Gnome Fortress but usually leave out one of the best precursors to that "convoluted and frustrating" niche: Nethack. Couldn't recommend it more. Completely free, still gets bugfixes 40 years later, incredibly obtuse and unfair

Another recommendation is Siralim Ultimate!

i'm a big fan of games whose gameplay is basically just "process information & then utilize it as fast as you can"...
i'll have to look into that other one though! never heard of it!
