A live possibility is the powers that be at WaPo did not expect that the result of their actions would be no one seeing the cartoon, but that regardless of how many saw the cartoon the incoming Trump administration would see that WaPo made a point of blocking it. That's their priority audience now.

Agree 100%. Bezos is happy with this play (though not with the overall situation) — he gets rid of Telnaes, publicly reaffirms his fealty to Trump, and his reputation’s not going any lower at the moment. It’s a win/win for him.
