hey i know we're in a period of using the speculative to tell heartwarming and cozy stories right now but i'm really excited for books that use the speculative to do really fucked up weird shit

maybe try Jeff Vandermeer? Excellent in the speculative weirdness category and he seems to be a stand-up fellow interested in the wildlife in his backyard instead of, yanno, assaulting women
I don't necessarily do heartwarming and cozy. But my characters generally end up with a somewhat positive ending. However, they go through really weird fucked up stuff on the way. And...most of my catalog is available at half price on Smashwords right now.
Then you definitely need to read the Beneath the Rising trilogy by @premeemohamed.com for some fucked up speculative horror shit. In the best way, of course.
I usually like speculative fiction but cannot handle it now. It is too close to real life. Thought Mandibles was a good story recently but scared the shi*t out of me. Americans became savage quickly. Seems too accurate

Hopefully it comes out next year.
(Granted it's been a long time since I read it so that's pretty much all I remember, lol)
