I think it is also a sign of the Israeli approach since then - they learned from that experience and have spent years what I can only call 'grooming' Western politicians of every flavour. It shouldn't be a surprise Russia are at it and so are China.
It's not just Putin who has been getting his way.

This is a slight exaggeration. Reagan suspended some shipments. Thatcher did go further with an arms embargo. Labour haven't gone that far but they have cut sales of offensive weapons. They have also stood by the ICC's ruling on Netanyahu. Would Thatcher have done that? She sheltered Pinochet.
