Everytime I sing the national anthem, I get chocked up on the last line. “Land of the free” just doesn’t feel right anymore. Many Americans have abandoned its ideals. Liberty, brotherhood, equality, justice. Now, it’s up to us to carry those ideals into the future, because if not us then who will?

When I was a child, I learned that the Constitution didn’t apply to people like us. I said the Pledge of Allegiance from inside a barbed wire camp, the words “with liberty and justice for all” wholly meaningless.

But I did not give up on America. I’ve spent my life fighting for its ideals.
