It's when someone just shows up out of nowhere - no introduction outside of the message, nothing that would make you know or expect the person - just shows up and starts talking to you, typically (but not always) to then try and sell you something.

I get so many of these, and they always try to pay lip service trying to act like they're fans first.

Thing is, it's always really transparent. It's REALLY easy to tell the difference between someone who genuinely enjoys what you do and someone pretending so they can sell you a product.

Don't get me wrong, I get how tough it can be to be an artist on social media. I'm not one myself but I'm friends with a lot of artists many of whom are struggling and desperately need commissions. But cold DMing people is just going to get you blacklisted. It won't help.

Usually I just send a polite message declining, and if they keep pushing the issue I just stop responding. It never leads to me even considering a commission.
