The thing is that this is a take that WAS true in the 80's and 90's when cheap plastic replaced metal and glass in a large amount of consumer goods. However now that has already been the case for decades we have had nothing but constant improvement since then. People's priors have not updated.

periodically you get someone talking about how "they don't make them like they used to" pointing at an ad from when prices where an order of magnitude lower. if you pay the same real price, you get *insanely* better stuff.
