Ford's CEO Jim Farley publicly said he ordered 5 Chinese EVs to be flown here last year to study his competitors, and he "doesn't want to give it up." But the company went through a manufacturer-only way to do so, which is probably also how BYD/Li Auto brought some cars here for YouTubers to test.

As for individuals, you mostly likely have to do it through a temporary import, which only allows the car to be here for 12 months. But this is why a lot of the Chinese EVs sold in Mexico can be found driving in cities near the southern borders like LA! But they can't change hands here tho.

And it was really fun talking to John Karlin, who believes he could be the first to import a Wuling Hongguang MiniEV Macaron to the US. He broke down for me his whole process of getting it shipped to the US, accepted through the customs, registered, insured, and everything else. It was fascinating.
