The underreported aspect of these tariff is the US trying to get countries to change their food safety, emissions, environmental and privacy regulations to get a reduction in tariffs.
I am honestly jealous of the hand gestures the Italians have at their disposal. In the US we only have the middle-finger and the double-finger when you really mean it.
Heck, we express the number two that's offensive elsewhere - but I am just asking for a table for two over here.
Republicans have declared economic war on the planet. I am THRILLED the EU, Canada, and Mexico are taking their money and their goods and building partnerships with countries that haven't become the oligarch of the world. I was afraid for a minute they'd grovel to the US.
Good for them, they are not backing down. It’s not going to hurt them as much as people might think. It will raise prices on some goods but as the people boycott US products they will find other ones from countries that do not have a tariff. That is what we are doing in Canada.
This is punching themselves though. They should be targeting specific companies/industries, not implementing a blanket tax increase on their own population.
Canada is doing just that. I think the EU knows what they are doing. Trump will not stand for it , and he will come to the table. At least the EU now has a bargaining position from which to come down to an agreement.
They’re probably giving businesses a head start into looking for alternatives. Just because we cut off our nose to spite their faces, doesn’t mean they have to descend to the same level of stupidity.
I cannot think of anything in my house that it is made or has tech from the US. Maybe my old HP laptop that I don't use anymore? Or a wrench? Everything else have been produced in Romania, Italy, China, S Korea, Japan. Uh I have some Nike apparel too, but this was a before inflation buy😂
These will target approximately €18 billion worth of goods, which will then apply together w. the reimposed measures from 2018. The objective is to ensure that the total value of the EU measures corresponds to the increased value of trade impacted by the new US tariffs. https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/qanda_25_750
Trump and his band of corrupt dunces are fucking with all the wrong people.
Xi Jinping and his lieutenants got to the top with knives out.
The EU is stocked with super smart people while our best and brightest are sidelined in favor of Laura Boomer and Peter Navarro.
I’m not super smart, nor do I ever have a “knife out”. But I do know that (sitting in the UK) all of my consumer needs (transport, technology, foodstuffs) can be satisfied by non-USA providers in Europe and Asia. Bring it on.
Strategy prob, to allow enough time for existing order to be delivered and for customs to be organized so it’s consistent - unlike the US which has been absolute chaos with no one border agent the same as the next. It also delays the toddlers tantrum on retaliation as he won’t know what to do.
That, or maybe they’re waiting to see where this all lands before then. They likely know trump doesn’t know wtf he’s doing and could change his mind before then 🤷🏼♀️.
I don’t think trump even knows what trump’s intentions are.
EU of course is multiple countries with a history of special interest so yeah, so think you’re right, a delay is like a couple deep breaths. Meanwhile the Europeans are just self imposing a ban on US goods and hitting the supply/demand equation hard.
Stupid. Instead of self-harming tariffs EU should go after the big tech companies… Microsoft, Google, Apple, Tesla, Netflix, …
THAT would deliver a message.

Tesla's sales in Europe were moving into statistical error territory already before Trump's war on global trade.

All the talk on how well German are good at yelly stuff, the Italians can say F-U without words the best in my opinion.
That said, part of me hopes this slows the right-ward march in Europe but I won't hold my breath.
We’ve perfected the elbow tap while middle finger salute combo (IYKYK) for centuries. It’s impossible to catch up to such a head start. 😁
Heck, we express the number two that's offensive elsewhere - but I am just asking for a table for two over here.
"Oh this thing didn't work, so now we have to redo it from from scratch." "Yaaaay!" (Flail arms around like Kermit).
Show MAGA how bad fascism is!!!
Instead of everyone winning through trade, each side starts counting losses.
EU purchased 427bln from US
US purchased 319bln from EU
US is ripping EU off!!!!!!!😉
They’re going to focus more on Services, where the US has a large favourable imbalance with EU
Data services is the main part of that, as it is a reliance that the EU now sees as a security as well as financial imbalance

The spellcheck is fierce on this app!
…
Corn dogs?
Cars, obviously, but what are some of the other big exports the world will be missing out on?
Movies.
Comic books.
What is really unique though?
Hope someone adds to this post, because I’m not really coming up with much.
Tomorrow would be better, to really make it count 😏

Big Talk. Won't last long.
It's a barking dog that is cripple, blind, deaf and has no teeth.
Trump would say; "you don't have the right cards".
