This is not exactly accurate. The Brits secretly demanded a backdoor access to all encrypted data, which would have affected all users globally. Apple publicly said no. Turning off protection for English users costs them but keeps the rest of apple encrypted. They’re not heroes but right move.

It wasn’t a choice so they (carefully) went public. UK customers know it’s the UK Govs doing and they have to fight them. Apple preserved our encryption because giving it to GB would have given it to anyone GB wanted deals with. Again, not your friend but the right play.

*Currently* Americans are legally allowed to have encryption. Apple has been clear in fighting for it in courts when cops try to access phones. And when companies break their security they patch. The concession they made was they can decrypt and account with individual court order, not whole cloth.

And yes, corporations are not your friend. But most companies just bow to demands in secret. (See AT&T data centers after patriot act.) Apple was transparent in this.
