Yes, because - fortunately for my players - my rolls are absolutely cursed as a GM. To the point where they've said I'm being a softy even though that couldn't be further from the truth.
Yes, but even more often it's the reverse (that players think I'm trying to kill them). The funny thing is, we play on Roll20 now and they *still* suspect I'm fudging the rolls somehow.
My rolls are public, which is both a blessing and a curse. A curse because yes, sometimes my BBEG really does roll that badly, and it's mildly embarrassing. On the other hand, I genuinely want my players to succeed.
When I play friendly npcs, my rolls are out in the open (much to the detriment, because then they see how little help they can be)! But my enemies they can be nasty sometimes😈
Once, one of my players was not convinced I passed the will save for a Mind Spike, so I actually lifted the GM screen!
I just roll very badly; I have sent many a screenshot. Weirdly I tend not to roll horribly the few times I am a player (most times) or when I am using helpful NPCs.
Using online platform it is all out in the open/public. But In person I would fudge as the GM about once a session for dramatic effect.
The public rolls aren't that bad except - on the rare nights when players are rolling crap and my monsters are critting all over the place. Doesn't feel good.

My players know that I don't fudge :)
