sometimes I think "modern au" shouldn't mean the same thing as "ordinary life with no magic" au. make luo binghe still be a demon with demon powers except now he goes to private school

Literally this. My husband is have an rp running right now with some dnd characters in a normal university setting but like my pc is an air Genasi so she still has the blue skin and the ability to hold her breath forever but nothing else really.
I'm having such a hard time deciding if my modern AU should include their powers or not
Like on one hand it's fun designing human version of non-human characters, on the other hand having powers makes some jokes funnier
The way i see modern au is them having almost the same skill that correlate to their original au. If healing magic, maybe theyre a very good doctor , if theyre fire bender, theyre a fire performer or pyrotechnican
"modern au" where my elder-god dragon, is still an elder-god dragon but now teaches history in a university and has a caffeine addiction to get him through the day
There could be some very interesting commentary when the "computer wizards" are literally trying to wrangle "daemons" in the code.
Personally, I'm also a fan of natural-born wizards turning to computers to make more reliable, consistent casting, and that normals can use it now is just a bonus.
"Living" latte art. Have the barista complain that they didn't train in the mountains for years, honing their powers, learning to levitate and change the temperature of things with just a touch, to now be paid 1 employee's wage for 3 employee's work as "they can handle it."
There's so much interesting societal and worldbuilding factors to have when there are still magical powers and demons.
Are there regulatory agencies for demons? Still existing discrimination, except not as overt and lethal? Do you have dumbasses on YouTube performing demon stunts for fun?
before he died sy had a whole douyin schtick where he dressed up as various characters to yell at airplane for not wrapping up their plot threads. he has an incredible prop wig collection
"who would put together ten different cosplays just to hate on someone" most frequent comment on his videos. he loves his lqg costume. sometimes he does a whole video in character to complain about airplane killing him off
luo binghe's life at cang qiong prep is exactly like george orwell's essay about how shitty it was to attend eton college as a scholarship student. everyone gets a birthday cake except for YOU
omg hahsh he has an entire dedicated series for crossdressing and complaining as all the wives and they’re consistently one of his most popular and he has no idea why
Or or or, there really is no magic, but your demon powers still behave exactly like canon and nobody seems to mind.
Tanya Dragonheart literally just started hovering using her secret ancient bloodline but Josh the part time Starbucks Bartender couldn’t give less of a shit

I cannot stand modern/no magic most of the time because I feel like it gets rid of the whimsy from the source☹️
maybe urban fantasy au for the thing u described?
Even a very casual integration for convenience's sake can captivate the audience with that feeling of
"I WISH I had that!!"

Magic is effectively an academic science stuff there, where most commonly used spells are written by a small few "coders."
Making your own? A single element/gimmick will likely take all your mental capacity to remember, so choose wisely and get creative!
but yes, agreed

airplane: oh hey! I know you! my crossdressing hater!! 🥰
sqq: why would you say it like this
