If your cats free roam, no matter what your reasoning is, please remember it just takes the one time for your pet to die a horrible death, no matter how fine it’s been this far.

I am angry at anyone who lets their cat wander free. As if wild animals and territorial dogs will care, or that somehow it’ll magically survive being hit by a car, or immune to deadly diseases and poisons. Even if you VERY STUPIDLY don’t entertain them enough, which is better? Bored, Or -DEAD-?
I work pest control. I tell people every day, their cat is a menace to America's local ecosystem, and their natural predator is the Honda Civic. They can also get into other yards that are being treated with pesticide and get exposure. Keep them inside.
I used to work in wildlife and had to put down so many animals following cat attacks. Strangely enough the owners usually just disconnect and shrug it off as if it were a normal part of the local ecosystem, same people want crows culled because they « eat baby birds »
The "its just what we've always done!" argument makes me insane. We also used to think sacrificing a goat made the plants grow and treated the flu with cocaine. Please attempt to learn new information.
There’s so many things out there that are, willingly or not, out for your cat. Dogs (I’ve seen it happen and you have no idea how fast it goes), cars, wildlife, poison, horrible people, traps, getting locked in somewhere, the options are endless.
I know it feels like your cat would be miserable inside if they’re used to going out but it doesn’t have to be. Safe access to outside is possible, a gentle transition and enrichment will have any cat be happy inside
I know this conversation is often a matter of choosing a camp and defending it, it’s we, people, do : but toss aside internet arguments and do what’s best for the little creatures under your care. They don’t know better, but you do
Gosh that's heartbreaking. I wish it were easier to get through to people, but so many are so casual about letting their little cat take on the entire world alone. Never wanna believe that, given proper enrichment, cats are *so* much happier inside.
"But my cats LOVE being outside!"
So do my dogs, which is why I walk them on a leash.
Not only do cats ruin ecosystems but people are crazy, too. Bird flu is rampant. Cars do not care. Coyotes do not care. Cats CAN go outside, just harness train them OR make inside way more interesting.
Exactly ! All our fosters had access to a secured cattio on the balcony to birdwatch and those with the temperament went to their new homes fully harness trained. I hope this becomes more common as people realise that cats are just as trainable as dogs
When cat owners defend free roaming with 'they're so bored inside, they need to roam' as if dogs don't. Reality is a lot of cat owners don't wanna play with their friend and it makes me sad. "They're destructive" they are BORED! Stimulate them! They sleep a lot so tire them out when they're awake!
I don't own a cat (currently) but my friends who do make it seem like cats are such a hassle and I never ever hear them mention about new toys or playing with their feline. I would think someone who loves their pets would always want the best for them, happy cats don't tend to wanna leave.

« He never goes too far » was their argument. He didn’t have to.
