I do think this points to one of the fault lines in disability community. There is a hierarchy of disability, where physical disability and disability that deviates from the norm more subtly are seen as more acceptable.

@ivanplis.bsky.social touches on this in his piece. Autistic people who speak, who do not have intellectual disabilities, who do not need a lot of support to do daily activities are seen as not really disabled or perhaps even superior (ex. Elon Musk).

Autism is a spectrum so these two groups are not like a light switch. People aren’t either mildly affected or severely impacted. There’s a lot of folks in-between, and the right services and supports can change what people can and can’t do.

Note: This does not mean I believe anyone can do anything. That is obviously very silly. But things like having a job, playing sports, living in your own place away from your parents are matters of resources and supports more than matters of ability.
