Marketing, marketing, marketing. Never ever ever underestimate it. Build off of your previous stuff for an audience. Use the connections that you do have to your advantage. Keep connecting and don't stop. Undertale didn't come from nowhere, it had a very popular demo.
Also a thing me and him can agree on: Start with working on Gamejams just to get for a feeling of what it's like to finish a smaller game in undera time-limit.

One thing I'd add to the "post progress" note is to consider making monthly newsletters or running a blog for your game progress
