Our problem is the gap when the wind doesn’t blow and the Sun doesn’t shine. Right now that is filled with very expensive gas. Unfortunately, renewables are also expensive. Hence we have some of the highest energy costs in the world.

Upfront costs of grid upgrades etc. are indeed expensive but renewables are far cheaper overall and in the long run.

That's why we need social tariffs to tide us over for the transition and warm home upgrades like insulation and heat pumps which are always reliable as well as a balanced energy mix

If they are cheaper overall and in the long run, how is it that the most recent CfD auction was priced very high! We need cheap nuclear and more interconnectors and location pricing. Pronto.

Gas invariably sets the highest price at the auction due to MPS and high strike prices. Renewables are always the cheapest. That's why we need to build renewables fast - as you are right, we can't meet demand yet but the price will continue to fall the more we invest.

Nuclear will be part of a balanced carbon-free energy mix to help meet demand.
However, it is still more costly than renewables.

I thought this was interesting from Hannah Ritchie. Perhaps market reform (which I know UK gov is considering) is required alongside transition. Higher renewable generation may not, by itself, guarantee lower prices for industry or consumer. 🤔🤔
