I've been struggling with historic parallels, and I've turned to fiction instead. The Trump coup is Voldemort's takeover of the Ministry of Magic, but Trump is actually Baron Harkonnen from the 1984 Dune movie.

Indeed, history should be used as a reference, not an obsession. The Second World War did have a far-reaching impact, but if we only use the Nazi analogy to understand today's problems, we may ignore the deeper historical context and social background.

Making Nazi references, and then picking at the fine differences between now and them, allows the critic to pretend that it isnt happening here because it isnt happening in exactly the same way. It’s a form of coping. Some people drink and some people create distinctions without differences.
