They claim their personal liberty is under attack when marginalised peoples demand equality and equity. This rhetoric deliberately confuses the freedom to oppress with freedom from oppression, treating basic rights for others as an infringement on their own autonomy.

Stop pretending this is clever or smart. It is a cut and paste of all right wing populist and reactionary movements. It echos from 1930s Germany, the 1950s anti-labour union discourse, and the KKK korero against civil rights in 1960s America.

We are witnessing the contemporary manifestation here. It is a pattern that involves dominant groups portraying Te Tiriti as oppression against them. That is the only lens through which to see those who argue for the Treaty Principles Bill over the coming months.
