What gen? I'm rocking an Air 2. I don't even think mine gets updates anymore. Still works, so I'll keep it until it breaks.

If you have a Mac, you can update your iPad from the Finder after plugging it in. It downloads the update to your computer first, which requires less space. I’ve only tried this on a Mac, but I believe it might also work with iTunes on Windows.
