But then don’t we just create a smaller echo chamber? Funnily enough I have found people making similar references to what they saw on X. Means we still have some aspects of a shared community. If we all just go in our respective corners then we increase the divide.

The problem is computing advancement is driven by for-profit advertisement. Funding goes to research which leads users to consume more time on social media. It is not driven by empowering the community to have a civilized discourse. At least with bluesky, we can avoid getting manipulated.

A v good point. Yes we curate our own social media feeds by how we engage, but it's hard to have defences against some social media algorithms (Neil Lawrence calls it #SystemZero). If social media weren't driven by the desperate need for clicks, it'd be transformed. I love Twitter but this is OK too

It’s not that I want to be in an echo chamber with no diversity of viewpoints. But I was involuntarily seeing too many violent and graphic content on X. So I fled.
I want to re-capture that civil and informative feed I used to get way back when.

Awesome thing is that if Bluesky ever starts failing in this regard, we will have the option to use alternative mobile apps/services because it's all open.

(I'll never forget how fun it was to hear you talking up Bluesky early on, while out on my bike ride listening to one of my favorite podcasts.)

Yeah, I don't get the echo chamber talk. Birds of a feather flock together for a reason. People like to discuss things with others who have the same interests. I'm into Blender & 3D art, and I like to interact with others who do too. Is this a "terrible echo chamber"? If so, then I don't care.

Another point about echo chambers I find is that those who only read from one source of information, be it NYT or WSJ, are themselves in an even smaller echo chamber of a small club of editors who all know each other… diversity of sources is ipt, including staying on X (find community notes useful)

Balance and context. If we don't interact in good faith with people we disagree with, we can start to form a distorted view of them.
Also it's beneficial to push our boundaries and experience a little discomfort occasionally.

I think this take hits it on the head. There are plenty of statements in my current feed that I don’t agree with. I have disagreed with people here more than on X in my final days there. X made disagreeing very difficult.
