If this can be answered without spoilers for subsequent books, does the hard sci-fi part remain mostly confined to things like orbital mechanics, or does it become a larger part of the overarching plot itself?
Absolutely. But i do think this is one of the few times where the show stands up to the books due to the authors also being the show runners and having input on the changes.
Characters in the show such as Amos, Camina Drummer, Bobbie Draper and the actors that portrayed them were amazing.

Definitely hard sci-fi in comparison to other series. No FTL travel or communication. No lasers and shields. And gravity is actually a thing.
People really underestimate how much most sci-fi depends on ignoring the effects of gravity.
