It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

Most major research institutions are sitting on multi-billion dollar endowments. Cal’s is $29 billion; Michigan’s is $19b; MIT’s is $24b; Stanford’s is over $29b. Wisconsin’s is $4b.

Either they find a way to tap into these or they’re going to see many careers of their researchers wither and die

Probably because everything is so vague that the administration can interpret it all however they want, and because the Trump administration rescinded their OMB memo. I'm sure the NSF director has been told to comply or they will "be volunteered for early retirement".
