In 44 years it has never interested me. I’m full time in the classroom and that’s where I’ll stay until the day I finish.
I have never been interested in leadership or all the extra workload that goes with it. It should never be assumed that someone wants to move towards leadership either.

I was acting HoD for two terms. Hated every day of it, especially as the outgoing HoD had left catastrophic mess as far as they eye could see.

I was dead on my feet every day of those two terms. I ended up leaving the school to be ‘just a teacher’ elsewhere, even though the school desperately wanted to keep me. Deputy head offered to do all my data analysis for me to lighten the load, but I was done.

Looking forward to listening Dylan. I already know the answer. No, its not worthwhile!
The kicker can be that some schools only offer it on a leadership pay spine. We know that this could be a workload 🚩. I always advise teachers to only do it with a TLR as they are still protected under STPCD.

Also even with a TLR, its just not worth it. When you break down the amount of pay you get for the (probable) hours worked, more stress/anxiety, it does not feel like it is a good deal.
Mind you teacher martyrs will proably love it while hating it! 😉

I don't think it's worth it. However experienced you are, teaching is a full-time job, and middle leaders are rarely given enough time to do both the leading and the teaching adequately.
