In vascular plants, ATG8 gene family is expanded. Previously, we proposed expansion may help compartmentalize different autophagy pathways that happen at the same time in the same cell (See👇 autophagosomes labelled by different ATG8s) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28038982/
Interestingly, when we complemented this mutant with A and H isoform, A could complement both carbon and nitrogen starvation, whereas H could only complement nitrogen starvation.
