this is also where I learned that the Brothers Grimm were not simply antisemitic in reflection of their antisemitic times, but quite deliberately set out to build a foundational Germanic mythology whose central thesis was antisemitism. that was the whole project! and it worked! the tropes stuck!!

Yepyepyep. Amanda Leduc also talks about this in the context of gender and disability in her book Disfigured. The Brothers Grimm specifically tried to insert a Germanic, Calvinist ideology into their fairy tales through Naturpoesie, which was co-opted by the Nazis as it fit quite snuggly.
