I believe it's fairly common. Cash up front with an agreement not to sue (and possibly some amount of NDA depending on the airline). There have been a dozen or so incidents of it I can find going back.

Alaska only offered $1500 for the door flight. cheapskates. :)

Hmm, didn't realize Alaska made that offer. In this case Delta is offering this cash with no strings attached, so passengers can still sue.

Yeah, that's probably smart. $30k isn't enough if they suffered serious injuries but it probably is enough to get a majority of the passengers to decide not to.

In 2024, for example, Singapore airlines offered $10k for a serious turbulence incident (with many injuries), with $25k for more serious injuries, and described it as "part of the final payment", implying there was probably more between ticket refunds and maybe medical stuff.

They are trying to get off cheap. Get the passenger to sign liability releases in exchange for the payouts.
