We didn’t know Pluto existed until 1930. We didn’t know what the cosmic microwave background radiation was until 1965. Honestly, our knowledge of astronomy was almost non existent before the 20th century. Closer to the Aztecs and the druids than modern times.

Telescopes have been around for so long I just assumed that a lot of stuff that was visible to the naked eye (galaxies that look like stars) was better understood with some magnification.

Can't see Pluto or radiation/microwaves so it makes sense we didn't know about it w/out instruments.

Ground-based telescopes were severely limited. Manufacturing techniques, methods for atmospheric correction, things like that just didn’t exist before the early 1900s and beyond. Go look at some old radio or visual telescope images from 100 years ago, they’re garbage.
