“Tore your banners down took the battle underground” Taylor went from the pastel rainbow (gay) aesthetic to the funeral black after her masters were sold- reminds me of taking down pride banners
We made it to the chorus! So Taylor now has painted us the picture that she wanted to come out in Lover and couldnt- Her Sweet Dream was over- and that she knows we know-and is preparing us for the Great War that is about to happen
bc she says “tears on the letter” that she’s writing to us-Midnights can be looked at as the letter (dear reader) or plan of what was to come with bearding and going back down the rabbit hole 🐇🕳️
“My hand was the one you reached for” is the Gaylors asking Taylor to DO SOMETHING BABE SAY SOMETHING! (I think your losing me can be interpreted as Taylor singing to swifties or gaylors singing to Taylor) when our hands touch the fuse will light- touching hands is Taylor TM and real Taylor merging
So now the Gaylors drew up some good faith treaties… ok, we get you are gunna need to do what you have to do to have a successful coming out (she’s tried twice we think-so she knows what does and doesn’t work) but the ends better justify the means to get there
Taylor begins this song with painting a picture which is a major strength of hers as a songwriter- she says “my knuckles were bruised like violets” taking me back to the imagery of the beginning of Cassandra “I was in my new (Lover) house placing day dreams”
she says “sucker punching walls cursed you as I slept talk” I picture Taylor metaphorically (or maybe literally lol) punching the wall in the lover house after ME! Backlash and the failed lover coming out- there was happiness because of ME! And there will be happiness after ME!
“spineless in my tomb of silence” // the coward claimed he was a lion- she knew we wanted her to come out but backed out after her masters were sold so her mortal enemy wouldn’t get the money
