I feel the same way as the author of the article. AGI is a long way off. I'm not even convinced it will be possible. What's more likey is that breakthroughs in processing power, and pipelining, will make extremely large LLMs and LLM integrations possible. The effect of that will be "near-AGI".

The engines themselves are mostly open source or have open source equivalents, and for anything really productive you need niche rather than large i.e. not a LLM but an NLM - which can be trained and retrained on a surprisingly small amount of content

The way to disempower these global actors is for every nation to develop its own nationalised search engines (no advertising) and local social media sites. The corporates will survive on the periphery if at all.
