A family member, who is liberal but lost in her own non-political delusions, told me the other day: “This is *my* truth, it’s what feels true to me” after saying some batshit crazy thing that wasn’t the least bit true. It’s not just the American right wing anymore.
But in reality, "testing one's beliefs" isn't really testing. No individual can run their own double blind study on ivermectin or vaccines, so you check WHO / HHS guidance. You have to trust a stranger either way. Do you trust the authorities, or the anti-authorities? (I choose team authority)
There is a whole tribe conditioned to cry "free speech" or "freedom" at the middle school level of understanding, believing the magic phrases unlocks a power-up or invincibility mode online and in real life. So, ta-da, absolved from all responsibility or moral criticism.
