He's as piss-weak as Jordan Peterson following up every lengthy, misogynistic rant with, "...don't you think?", then saying, "Oh no, I was just asking a question. I didn't actually say anything."
There is no truth to the argument that global trade is unfair. Consumers want a product, so they buy it. It's important to regulate products, but this should be neutral to the place they were made.
How is a company paying living wages, being environmentally responsible, supposed to complete with one using slave labor, dumping all their waste into a lake, and receiving large government subsidies?
It's not sustainable.
Slave labor can lead to political instability, improper waste disposal makes their population less healthy, and constant large government subsidies for a product that doesn't provide benefits for the citizens (food, medicine) or makes a profit can cause massive inflation.
When the NY Times has an article about economics, couldn't they at least choose an author who knows something about economics? Someone who took Econ 101 in college? Trade isn't about "my tariff is bigger than yours," but about what is gained by trade. The USA has done really well.
I don't read stories with questiomark headlines. You would read it because you want to know the answer, which they absolutely will not give you. If they had it, they would state it in a declarative sentence.
The idea that the president of the us somehow thinks that having a trade deficit with a country means that it is somehow ripping you off, is insane. How did he even convince anyone that he has any idea how economics work?
Is the biggest problem with the argument really hypocrisy? Are we 100% sure the richest country in the world for several decades in a row isn't making out pretty well on global trade? Maybe run those numbers again sport
You shouldn’t be too hard on the NYT. Their journalists don’t have a lot of time between pumping out cooking articles and word games to do actual reporting.
You buy more from the supermarket than the supermarket is buying from you. Doesn't mean the supermarket is screwing you over... That's a trade deficit.

Nice one.
That sounds more like what he needs to do than what he's actually doing.
Btw, I agree with the sentiment.
(I believe that’s the NYT)
