I rescued a chocolate lab, something something he turned into a f****** 80 pound beast. I don't know how much I spent on him.I loved every minute of it.
Oh nvmd. You’re talking about the cult rescue that holds million$ parties at maralardo every year. Not a single hint of diversity in the directors. They all look exactly alike - you know what I mean. These people have never cleaned up dog poop in their life. Fuck Lara Trump and all her witches.
How many rescues can do DNA testing on every animal that comes in? We rescued 2 doxies from 2 different rescues in 2 different counties and both had similar costs. We did DNA testing later and both are purebreds.
If this is South Florida’s Big (and small) Dog Rescue, it’s a big and well run facility. They check everything about you, including condo or community size and breed restrictions. It’s one of, if not the, biggest around.
When we adopted our pug-mix puppies from a rescue, they explained that the adoption fee was more to, basically, “pay it forward” for the older dogs or breeds that may have a harder time in finding homes.
The rescue where I got both my dogs and the rescue I currently volunteer at do not base their adoption fees on breed. The fees for puppies and kittens are higher while fees for seniors and special needs are lower, but breed is not a factor.
Unfortunately, a lot of dog shelters and rescues will charge more to adopt a dog they suspect or know is purebred. It's a predatory practice that should be banned.
No reputable rescue would charge their rehoming fee based on the hotness of the breed. They may give a discount for special needs or senior dogs since those are much harder to place.
Any rescue helping Trump is awful since he has made it known his disdain for dogs.
Odie and Elmo came to Halo Animal Rescue from another rescue in Mexico. We’re in AZ. My fee was based on the fact that they were young (2&3 years) and were neutered, chipped, vet checked and vaccinated.
I looked at their website. They're based in FL w/"campuses" in AL and TX so lots of dogs, evidently. I didn't see any prices listed so their "$100 off" offer doesn't provide much assurance. I don't spend time on rescue sites who don't post prices. Always seems shady to me. 🤷
Sometimes, and also based on a dog's age. However, adult mutts are the best dogs in the world. They have enormous value to me. Each is one of a kind! What's more exclusive than that?
Yes they do! At least in San Francisco. They charge around $700 for 'brand name' dogs. It's way better than going to a puppy mill and I figure all that money goes back into the costs of running the shelter.
Anyone in Kansas want a dog for free? The vet clinic I work for has a wonderful girl named Mia who's been looking for a home for almost a year now. #dog #adopt #pet
Offering up pups for free has had a tendency to attract the dog fighting crowd. They are free “bait dogs” to train their fighters on unfortunately… Don’t give a dog to just anyone, please.
And we are a vet clinic capable of "vetting" anyone and everyone who walks through our door wanting to adopt an animal. Trust me, I would never ever ever want to send Mia to a place she would be abused again.
Mia was a rescue from a abusive owner who hit her in the head with a rubber mallet for being "to loud" while he was watching TV. She's been with us looking for a home ever since.
Right?! Poor Mia now just wants to meet every single person, every single dog, and experience everything life has to offer. Just an absolute goofy loveable dog.
Rescues near me try to shift pure breeds into breed specific rescues. That opens up space for more dogs, and the pure breeds go into experienced foster homes. Our two were the only Bloodhounds at a rural shelter, they had no idea about the breed.
No. One price. A true Humane Society or Rescue group asks for money upfront for neutering. Animals must be chipped without fail. If they have no money for these necessities then they don't have $ for vet bill if dog gets sick or fractures a leg.
This is the organization that provides the "rescue" dogs for the Mar-a-Lago auctions. They feature Trump's inner circle in their 2024 report. They also claim to rescue from "Puppy mills" in multiple states, then they resell these dogs for a higher fee than mixed breed dogs. Rescuing or a Pet Store?
Some rescues do specialize in certain breeds, but yes most are just mutts. The 500 is a lot however (at least it seems so to me) I was associated with a breed specific rescue for about 5 years. we had about 350 golden retrievers a year go through our home
1. I volunteered in rescue for a few years. Many rescues take dogs from breeders/puppy mills who have all their dogs removed by animal control because of bad conditions. It costs a lot of $ to properly vet these animals (price veterinary care lately?) They are not making money.
2. They do commonly charge higher adoption fees for more "desirable pets"- ie puppies, young dogs, purebred dogs & less for older pets, mixed breed dogs & dogs w/ health concerns. The extra money from the more coveted dogs helps vet ALL the dogs. A fully vetted rescue dog is a bargain usually
That said, there are unscrupulous "rescuers" who take dogs from kill shelters down south & bring them north with poor vetting and "adopt" them out. These dogs may end up being very expensive & the "rescuer" is just in it for the money. Some have been charged with animal abuse.
There are breed specific rescues. The fact that I can't find the adoption prices on any individual animal/type of animal is concerning. And then I find this in their ridiculously long leadership people list... Not surprised
I've worked in rescue. That's not normal here. Purebred dogs typically get sent from shelters to breed-specific rescues immediately. Non-breed rescues almost never see purebred dogs. They'd need to be directly surrendered TO that rescue. Maybe pedigreed pits from lack of rescues. 🤨 Big red flags.
There are breed-specific rescues that only/mostly do one specific breed; there’s also a statistic that something like 30% of all dogs in shelters are purebred. Rescues & shelters are in absolute crisis right now — the # of animals being surrendered/dumped is insane, so 500 might be nothing.
You’d be surprised. There are breed specific rescues, and certain breeds are more likely to get surrendered because people don’t do enough research. I’ve had five purebred huskies, four of whom were rescues.
I am cofounder of a fairly large rescue in New England. Our fees do not vary by breed but by age - younger dogs have a fee higher than a senior to help support those seniors who need more.
Probably not common but when we adopted our Yorkie, she and 15 others had come to the rescue after the breeder who had previously had them died. So there are situations.
Speaking to the first point, it's not uncommon to get large numbers of purebreds, especially if a badkyard breeder ring is busted. I've adopted purebreds on a couple of occasions from such scenarios. Charging MORE for them, though? Yeah, don't agree with that, but I can also see why, maybe.
It's so that the rescue can direct some of the money toward less "desirable" pets with extra medical needs. (volunteered with a rescue for a few years)
No, there are breed-specific rescues because people see things in movies and TV and think cute puppy, but have no idea how to deal with breed specific traits. Game of Thrones is why there are so many Huskies in shelters. I’ve adopted from both a golden retriever rescue & an Afghan Hound rescue.
Lots of local rescues work together in finding homes. The cost is for things like getting them “fixed”, vaccines, chip, recouping some of the cost for while they were there, etc.
I worry about the fate of dogs from situations like this.. given aa s holiday gift to people not ready for them or used and neglected for bait or worse. I hope there are checks in place
"Designer" dogs are all mutts
I've had several people ask what Hunter John is. They often tell me he looks like Akita. Sure 😉😉
My sister is getting her three grand-dogs DNA tests for Christmas. My grand-dog is a Corgi.
My Brindle Girl was a Boxer/Chow. I rescued her at 4wks. We knew what she was.
In general, yes. Puppies are always more expensive. Senior dogs are generally adopted out at a reduced price; they are harder to place. We once adopted a ‘damaged’ (my word) older dog with health issues, no fee required. We donated $100.
Yes in most circumstances, young dogs & puppies are normally more expensive. There is an adoption fee which goes toward the care, food & medical needs of the dog(s) at the rescue. This would include shots and spay/neutering. I have had 4 rescues & would never purchase one from a breeder or pet store.

They are so full
Shop there not puppy mills please

And moving 500 dogs seems like quite the volume.

Size, age, breed, neutered, medical needs, chipped, do they come from outside the country - it all plays a factor.
